Six local students have been recognized for their outstanding achievements in the Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Remembrance Contest, earning prizes at the Kootenay Zone level of competition.

Jack McCuaig, Sylvie Thomas, Mazzie Richards, Zoe Huscroft, Emily Goretzki, and Amasara Comazetto were honoured for their exceptional poster and literary submissions, which demonstrated creativity, insight, and a deep respect for the meaning of Remembrance and the sacrifices made by Canada’s Veterans.

The Royal Canadian Legion Youth Remembrance Contest is a national program that encourages young Canadians to reflect on the significance of Remembrance. The competition involves multiple levels of judging. Poster and literary works first compete at the Legion Branch 51 local level, with winning entries advancing to the West Kootenay Zone. First-place entries at the zone level are then forwarded to the provincial competition, where finalists from across the province are selected. Provincial finalists advance to final judging by the Legion National Foundation, which determines the national winners.

Achieving recognition at the Kootenay Zone level represents a significant accomplishment, as entries compete against top submissions from communities throughout the region.

“These students should be very proud of their achievements,” said Bill Haire, President. “Their work reflects both artistic excellence and a thoughtful understanding of the importance of honouring Canada’s Veterans and preserving the legacy of Remembrance.”

The Royal Canadian Legion continues to celebrate the success of youth participants nationwide.
